ByteDance Appoints Its CFO As the CEO of TikTok

April 30, 2021 10:44 pm

Beijing (PingWest)—Shou Zi Chew (Chinese name 周受资) , who recently became chief financial officer of ByteDance, will also serve as TikTok's chief executive officer. Meanwhile, Vanessa Pappas, TikTok's interim head, has been appointed as the chief operating officer, according to Bloomberg.

TikTok had been without an official CEO since the last person for that post, Kevin Mayer, who was poached from Disney, resigned amid a dispute with the White House in August last year. At that time, Pappas, who was in charge of the company's North American operations, was appointed as its interim chief. If you need to refresh your memory about the horrendously confusing TikTok saga, read our comprehensive timeline.

Chew, a 39-year-old Singaporean national, is a new member to ByteDance, joining only a month ago as its CFO. He had served as Xiaomi's CFO from 2015 to 2020, helping the immensely successful Chinese gadget company go public, and also ran its international business for some time.

Earlier, Reuters reported that ByteDance had hired Chew, indicating that the Beijing-headquartered tech company is moving towards a highly anticipated initial public offering. But later the company responded that it is not ready to go public, nor does it have an upcoming IPO plan. If anything, the hiring of Chew only siginified that ByteDance is steadfast on expanding globally.
