Alipay comes to a Walgreens near you

February 14, 2019 10:20 am

Alibaba’s mobile payment platform Alipay and Walgreens jointly announced a partnership to deploy Alipay to more than 7000 Walgreens stores in the US. Alipay is currently available at 3,000 Walgreens stores in the US, including cities where Alipay users travel the most such as New York City, San Francisco, and Las Vegas, according to CISION PR Newswire. An additional 4,000 stores will add Alipay to their payment system by April.

Alipay is the most popular payment tool used in China. As Chinese people travel abroad, they prefer to use the more familiar payment method, as opposed to a credit card. This expanded strategic collaboration is meant to better serve as many as four million travelers at any given time in the US. In addition, there are up to one million Chinese students in the US, according to statistics from Forward Pathway. Meanwhile, there are 3.12 million Chinese Americans, including the first-generation and second-generation immigrants, demographic statistics on Chamiji.com show. The partnership is also meant to serve their needs.
