Apple is reportedly developing its ChatGPT-style product

Apple has finally jumped aboard the LLM trend.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg News said on Wednesday that the smartphone giant is developing its own large language model and a ChatGPT-like AI chatbot.

Internally referred to as "Apple GPT," the AI-powered chatbot is built upon the company's proprietary AI foundation, Ajax, which operates on Google Cloud and utilizes Google JAX, the machine learning framework from the search giant.

Apple employees are using the chatbot to help with product prototyping. The chatbot can be used to summarize text and answer questions based on data it has been trained with.

While there are no solid plans yet to release the technology to the public, Bloomberg's sources indicate that Apple is gearing up for a "significant AI-related announcement" sometime next year.

Although Apple has been applying AI capabilities into its products and apps for years, it has fallen behind in the recent generative AI arms race as other tech giants including Meta, Microsoft, and Google have rapidly released their own generative AI products to businesses and the public.
