Chinese VR headset maker Nreal rebrands as XREAL ahead of Apple's XR device launch event

Chinese notable headset manufacturer Nreal announced a rebrand as XREAL, along with two new technologies – XREAL Spatial Display and XREAL Beam on Thursday.

XREAL stated that the rebrand was in “preparation for its next stage of global expansion,” according to its press release. "The 'X' in XREAL reflects our commitment to the vision of expanding reality and creating cross-reality experiences. It is also a reminder to ourselves that we need to be extra real when delivering value to customers," said Peng Jin, co-founder at XREAL.

XREAL introduced the Spatial Display, an advanced iteration of the previous Air Casting mode popular among users of the now-renamed XREAL Air. The firm is also set on making 3DoF tracking – a feature formerly exclusive to Android and MacOS customers through the Nebula app. This would entail displays being body-anchored instead of reacting to head movements.

Additionally, XREAL launched the XREAL Beam, an adapter designed to enable Spatial Display across various platforms, including gaming consoles, smartphones, and personal computers. XREAL declared its intent to extend Nebula's compatibility to encompass Windows and Steam Deck systems.

Founded in 2017 by former employees from Magic Leap, Google, and AMD, XREAL is a manufacturer of consumer AR glasses. The firm claimed that it had shipped over 170,000 units since 2019 globally.
