In April, Tesla sold 35,478 units in China, a 27% decrease from the previous month, according to China's passenger car association (CPCA).

Details: In the first three months, Tesla's sales in China were 15,484 units, 18,318 units, and 35,478 units. It also exported 14,174 units from China in April.

Conventional Chinese carmakers SAIC and BYD performed strongly in April, with sales of new energy vehicles (NEV) reaching 30,602 and 25,450 respectively.

The Model Y production line of Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory was suspended for two weeks in April for upgrades, which also led to a decline in sales.

Context: Tesla is facing mounting pressure in China as state media and regulators criticize the EV maker following a customer's protest at a major auto show.

On April 19, a woman who claimed to be a Tesla customer stood on one of the company's cars at Shanghai Auto Show to protest against malfunctioning brakes accident in her car. A video of the incident went viral on Chinese social networks and was picked up by state media.

In a post on Weibo, a Twitter-like service, Tesla China said it would not compromise on “unreasonable demands” from the customer. However, after being criticized by the state-owned media, Tesla China apologized for the treatment of its customers, saying it will carry out “self-examination and self-correction” to “rectify” problems.
