UK Bans Huawei's 5G Network Equipment from September

Beijing (PingWest)—Telecom providers must stop installing Huawei equipment in the UK's 5G network starting in September next year, the UK government said.

According to The Guardian, UK's digital secretary, Oliver Dowden, set out a roadmap to remove high-risk vendors ahead of the telecommunications (security) bill coming before parliament. The legislation would create national security powers capable of imposing controls on when – if at all – a telecoms firm could use material supplied by companies such as Huawei.

The British Minister announced in July that by 2027, Huawei will be banned from use in the UK’s next-generation mobile network, and purchases will be banned from January 2021.

In order to comply with these regulations, telephone companies eventually had to stop adding Huawei components, but the new ban may speed up their plans to overhaul the system. Maintaining existing equipment will be allowed.

The government stated that, except in limited circumstances, from April 2021, operators will be prohibited from outsourcing services to Huawei. Negotiations on fixed broadband network rules are also underway.

According to the 5G supply chain strategy released on Monday, the UK will consider commercial incentives to help operators diversify. It added that officials will work with "like-minded countries" to stimulate demand, as the UK only accounts for 2% of Huawei' global revenue.
