Beijing (PingWest)—Tesla will set up a new energy vehicle innovation center project in Hainan and start installing superchargers throughout the island, the Hainan provincial authorities announced today.
On October 13, Hainan Free Trade Port signed 46 key investment projects, including nine foreign deals, at the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center. From free trade port construction to industrial development and public services, the amount of the agreements reached 17 billion yuan ($2.52 billion).
The most eye-catching is the project signed with Tesla, which involves technical research and development of electric vehicle batteries and energy storage equipment.
Hainan is expected to become one of the important layouts of Tesla's global new energy product research and development system, said the authority.
Xu Yao, the regional sales manager of Tesla in Hainan, said that the electric automaker will accelerate the construction of its charging networks and expand the layout of sales network and after-sales services in Hainan to provide a better service.
In June, China unveiled a package of special policies for Hainan, including scrapping import duties, in an effort to turn Hainan into a ‘free trade port’ similar to Hong Kong, as China faces the risk of decoupling with the US.
The project to make Hainan into a regional trade, shopping, and shipping center has been “planned, arranged and promoted by General Secretary Xi Jinping personally”, according to the government statement.
