Samsung Electronics Suzhou Computer Lays Off Employees Except Those in R&D Unit

Samsung company changed its development strategy to keep operations of the research and development (R&D) unit only, as the market competition is becoming more and more intense that results in a shrinking market share of Samsung, according to nbd.com on Friday. The new strategy aims to adapt to the market change and new situation of the computer industry.

The notice was posted everywhere at the company, an employee of SESC told nbd.com, adding that he and his colleagues might be informed about the compensation plan Friday. She also said that she has worked at the SESC for 9 years, and the sudden notice made her loath to leave the company.

The SESC was established in March 2003 with a total investment of $3.358 billion. Its sales grew to RMB35 billion per year from less than RMB3 billion per year. Employee number increased to 6,500 by the end of 2012.

The shipment of Samsung computers did not rank high. Global PC shipment bounced back in the second quarter of 2020, according to IT service management company Granter. PC shipments topped 6.8 million units in Q2 2020, representing a 2.8% increase year-over-year. But Samsung was not ranked top 6 computer companies.
