China’s first large scale sci-fi movie, The Wandering Earth, was released on February 5, the first day of Chinese New Year, and has already earned $300M over the holiday, dominating the office box.

An adaption of a story by China's most famous science fiction writer, Liu Cixin, the film tells a story set in the future, when scientists find that the sun is dying out and will destroy the Earth. Humanity builds thrusters to move the earth to a new star system in a journey that is to take 2,500 years, during which heroes fight for everyone’s survival.

The film marks a big step forward for the Chinese sci-fi film industry.
